You make a good point about wide-angle abilities, but don't be so quick to dismiss the longer zoom lenses. I have a Canon Powershot S2 IS (12x zoom, 36-432mm equivalent) from several years ago that I've always gotten fantastic results with. Canon tends to stabilize the image by shifting the lens elements, allowing sharp pictures to be taken in low light without needing a tripod. You can even see the difference just when looking through the viewfinder with IS enabled versus disabled.
I don't use my S2 much anymore, now that I've moved to a dSLR (also Canon) to hone my skills, but I've often considered getting a pocket-sized compact digicam to keep in my car or whatever. It would definitely be a Canon, for image quality more than anything else.
