According to the story, the driver was unable to steer due to the bike being lodged underneath. I would assume that if the driver lost steering because the front of the RV was jacked up, he would also loose the ability to brake with the front wheels as well. If that is the case and the RV was relying mainly on the rear brakes, 500 feet sounds about right. Again, those are just my assumptions. Although, if I were driving the RV I guess I wouldn't be in a big hurry to slow down either.
