So... what if the very people who seek an engaging car are the ones who are more likely to notice a degradation in ride/handling, or be unwilling to just live with little new noises? Likewise, perhaps those who are satisfied with the proverbial "appliance" car don't spend any money on anything other than necessary items?
Of course, this doesn't explain the difference in the cars' required maintenance intervals, etc... but a more "discerning" owner requires a more finely tuned machine to begin with, and finely tuned machines have smaller tolerances for every system.
Then again, an electrical system doesn't make the car handle any better, and all electrical systems "should" be equally robust. But, here again, when price points are the targets, then corners must be cut to keep the car to the magical $30K (for example).
Suspension parts and handling do make maintenance-free long-term ownership mutually exclusive to great handling. Things like bushings and shocks are wear items which require more frequent replacement on, say, an M3 or Viggen than on a Camry. That's just the way it is. In my experience, the items which my car requires I spend money on are the very items which are different because I expect higher performance from my car than a typical Malibu owner wants. (I don't know about you, but my Saab's engine has been trouble-free for years... It hasn't needed a valve-job or a rebuilt transmission. It has needed regular wear items for a 16 year-old car. (Exhaust, engine mounts, headliner).
Oh man, so much to think about...
