It's been that way for years Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sun, 30 Aug 2009 19:24:20 In Reply to: Blurred Lines / Foreign & Domestic Cars, EGD [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 29 Aug 2009 08:56:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In the 1980's, VW made Rabbits in Penn. Many US BMWs are built in South Carolina. You can buy Subarus built in the US. I haven't looked into it recently, but I'll bet there are Toyota plants in the US. Hondas were built in Ohio - I suspect they still are.
GM's 'dirty little secret' was that for decades, many of the cars were built in Ontario. Last I checked, Canada isn't in the US.
Parts are sourced from all over the world. Even 'domestic' part houses are using sub-components from all over the world. The concept of a domestic or foreign car has blurred as designs and parts distribution has gone global. You can't even say it's where the headquarters are - these are all multi-national companies, with executives and shareholders all over the world.
And 'foreign' cars in the US are different from the 'same' foreign cars in other countries. 40 years ago the Toyota that was imported into the US was pretty much the same as the home market (except for the steering wheel being on the other side). Nowdays, the US market is big enough (still) that we get models and setups not sold anywhere else. And Ford and GM sell cars in Europe that we don't see here - more's the pity. I'd love to see the Ford Mondeo in the US.
Foreign and domestic no longer make much sense in the global car economoy (what's left of it, anyway)
