Spark voltage is a function of voltage required and plug gap. Increasing the gap increases the voltage (more energy) because it also increases the voltage required. This can be exressed mathematically of course. Because of the nature of injector spay principles, wall wetting, and fuel contact with intake valve, velocity of incoming air etc... fuel is hardly ever atomized completely so a hotter spark makes it easier to ignite larger droplets. On a side note, an NGK BCP7ES gapped at 1.0mm requires a mere 25% of the voltage available (40k volts) so there's more than enough "reserves" of electrical energy in case one is worried about one's DI being overloaded. Gapping below what the engineers specify is only creating other long term problems and wasting fuel. Also, a thinner (center) electrode releases electrons easier (thus less voltage requirement) because it gets hotter and can produce a hotter spark if gapped accordingly. Only metals like platnium and iridium can handle those temperatures without melting. Sorry for rambling...
