and you can have access to their lenses, then go with the Canon. You don't need instructional DVD. I'm sure your friends can show you the ropes better. Besides, plenty of help is available online -- join a users forum or group, just like saabnet.
Protection plan, particularly the one offered by Ritz, is a rip-off. I have more faith in B&H and Adorama. And as already noted, some credit-cards automatically extend the manufacturing warranty by a year.
Having said all that, my issue with the Canon-T1i/lens combo is that it's a $100-$150 lens, and presumably not a good one (as per some user reviews). This means the body is $650. Not too long ago, 40D was going for $750 on Amazon!
BTW, if you have a Target nearby, do go and check out the Pentax K2000 kits -- one lens kit is $500 (with a nice bag, not the usual cheap type); two lenses kit is $600. Pentax kit lenses are far better than Canon kit lenses, so are Nikon's. And Pentax often extends manufacturing warranty to 3 years. Just call and find out if that promotion is still current.
