I agree the over payment was unnecessary. The best thing to do (after you've called and asked for the late fee and other charges be waived) is to keep the balance at or near zero for the remaining/following billing cycle. If you have online access and online bill pay through your bank, this is pretty easy to do. Once you make a charge or two, just go online and pay those charges keeping your balance at zero.
This way, for the following billing cycle, your finance charges should be rather low because the average daily balance will be low. Once that billing cycle is over, you should be able to go back to normal operations (paying monthly).
