There are cheaper plastic inserts for their faucets, or a heavier duty stainless. Surprised your shower faucet died after only 9yrs. Great thing about Delta is durability, and ease of repair.
Plumbing supply houses usually charge a restocking fee, but you can check with your's. And yes, I have found that a good plumbing supply place will have better quality than the big boxes in top of the line stuff. Had one where the prices were cheaper too, then they went to dealing with installers only. Bummer! Lower lines make little difference in quality between stores. Installers often double the cost, so that is something to keep in mind too.
