Someone here had given great reviews to the General Artic, which the store has, but they recommended the Nordman 2, which is made by Nokian. Mounted, balanced, stems, with free changeover and flat repair, they are $98 each. The Generals were a couple bucks more. Haven't researched either tire at all, though. (This tire guy is not the cheapest, but he's 5 miles away and the work is always done right. Does great alignments, too)
Anyway, I put 4 new Nokian WRs on #1 daughter's 9K ($472 all up, all in). She ran the last set 3.5 years running year 'round (she's at school in Maine). However, since I'm looking at 8 more snow tires this year--my wife's 9-5 wagon and #2 kid's 9-3, I'd maybe be OK to save a few bucks on winter treads. So I'm thinking whether to spend less or more and looking for ideas/suggestions.
FWIW, we had the Dunlop M3 Wintersports on the 9-5 for 3 winters and they were merely OK. I didn't think they were much better (if at all) than the Nokian WRs I run on my 9K, even with the 9-5 having traction control.
IMHO, the tests we all read are interesting and useful, but they are with somewhat trained drivers under relatively controlled conditions doing prescribed maneuvers. I'd rather hear from people here who've had the tires on real roads with hills and variable surfaces and different conditions. I do know that WRs have gotten me painlessly through blizzards on barely plowed (or unplowed) rural roads, but that doesn't mean they are the only tire that will do that.
