When buying my last car, I actually did cross-shop a Fit, used Civic, and ended up with the slightly more used 9-5 - all within $2k of each other. I threw the Fit out pretty early on, since being a tall guy, I just didn't really want to drive around with that "clown car" image. Yet I have a good friend who bought one, and it seems like a great car anyway.
The used 9-5 just offered so much more for similar $$, and it's beautiful and I love it and there are a thousand other reasons why I ended up with it. It's a Saab!
In your case, I would try to push them to upgrade to the Civic - it's a much more desirable car, er - make that less un-desirable - for just about anyone. So there's a much better chance that you or your son wouldn't mind it as a daily driver. For some people, the Fit just isn't a good fit (har har har). Plus, it's not much difference in $$.
