This varies by where you live. If you're going to ditch the landline you need cell service that is always there. So pick the company based on how good their signal/service is. Verizon has generally great coverage, but is not as universal as the company claims.
Then pick the phone. But really basic phones are very hard to find unless you go with a basic pay-as-you-go plan, but many of those phones aren't all that solid and the actual cost if you're replacing your landline may be higher as minutes cost more than on a monthly plan. No matter what you get, it is probably a 2-3 year phone. Nature of life these days.
Let me suggest an alternative approach. Assuming you have high speed internet in your house/condo/apartment, consider a VOIP phone service like Vonage. It's cheap: up to about $26/month depending on plan. It has multiple voice mail boxees, call waiting, caller ID, forwarding, etc. I've been using it in my home office for 5+ years with zero issues. I have it configured to forward to my cell phone so I never miss a call anywhere in the world there's a signal. And it has 911-emergency capability. The only downside is you lose your phone if you lose power. But if weather-related power outages are not an issue for you this might be a good solution, especially if teamed with cell phones.
