One option that we went with is a System called Ooma. Basically you buy their system, which uses your internet connection directly, meaning your computer does not have to be on. The cost of their basic Ooma Hub and Scout is running about $200 for the system then it is $0 cost per month for life, they do offer a premium plan for $100 a year (will go to $119 next year) for advance service option including a second line. You can go to their website of the same name for more info. Another thing I do with my wife, is got her a pay as you go plan from T-Mobile, but what I did was purchase a 1000 minutes for a $100 which is good for one year and after that you just need to add a $10 min to continue it for the next year with any unused minutes from the first year rolling over to the next year. My wife uses it only for emergency's and the occasional 10-15 minute call every month (not a big cell phone user) It has worked out for me for the last two years and so I am paying $10 a year for cell service. Any unlocked cell phone would work, even T-mobile sell pre-paid basic phones starting at $20. I think most of the cell phone companies offer a signal strength map from which you can see if you can get good reception at home and in your area.
