Lassic 900 automatic transmissions Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 08:33:43 In Reply to: The Meaning of Of SAAB, the vehicles, and the owners,, MattWiltse [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 14 Dec 2009 00:02:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I don't want to rain of you parade, and I don't think you'll have any problems with it for a year or two, but the C900 automatic transmission is one of the weak spots of the classic 900. On the Classic 900 board you will find a general consensus that the automatic transmission will typically fail at 135,000-145,000 miles. The autobox on my 1990 vert died at 134,500 or so.
Before sinking any serious money in the vert you found, you might wish to use the next year or two shopping for a good deal on a 5-speed vert, or be prepared to replace the tranny in a year or two (about $2,000 to $3,000, depending on whether you do the work yourself or have it done. I converted mine to a 5-speed myself using a very high quality Eriksson Industries rebuilt unit. As much as you like the car now, the power and control the much improved gear ratios of the 5-speed provide will turn infatuation into a lifelong love affair with the car. The weakness of the autmatic tranny is that 1st gear is a bit to high (like starting off in 2nd in the manual).
