Several mentions of VW vans/buses. I had a beat up old VW Westfala pop-top campermobile back in the 80's. Lots of memories of that unique vehicle.
Had it all packed up for a week longroad trip up to Nova Scotia with several members of the cycling team I raced for but couldn't find the key. The stage race started the following day an we had to make it. One of my team members for the trip was from Charlestown, Mass - then the car theft capital of the country. He popped the ignition (didn't ask how he knew how). Drove the bus for three more years starting it with a screwdriver.
Another time I was working on the engine and cranked it over with box wrench left sitting in the flywheel. It busted a couple of the cooling vanes off the cast flywheel making the engine pretty unblanaced. My solution was to simply bust two more vanes off the opposite side. Worked like a charm!
Knew the end was near when the rocker panel below the sliding door rusted out. Took an on ramp pretty fast one day and the entire door ended up in the bushes. I laughed my ass off when the same thing happend in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine".
Ended up giving it away to a buddy who lived in it in a friends backyard for almost a year. Oh, to be young and foolish again!
