I've got a late '05 Samsung CRT HDTV monitor w/ 1 HDMI, 1 Component, at least 2 Composite, S-Video, and cable inputs. Because it's a monitor I need tuner input (Cable box capable of HDTV) and, of course, DVD input. I have the cable box routed via HDMI cable to take advantage of the high def video/audio signal from cable and use the Component video signal from the DVD/home theatre unit for signal to the monitor. The "optimum size" monitor for our "viewing area" precludes anything larger than 40" - 42" so until I'm ready to shell out for a new boob tube, the 30"er is fine with us.
I clearly see a difference b/t 480 and 1080 signals on the monitor for b'cast video (such as sports events available on either the HiDef cable signal or the Standard Def cable signal). Since I can not check the difference b/t my 480 DVD/home theatre component and a HiDef Blue Ray player, I'm not worried about it. I "know" blue ray is better, but do not feel the need to upgrade. I'm operating on a "If it ain't broke, don' fix it" basis. When I upgrade the home theatre component, I'll look for a 1080p unit; 'til then I'm happy with overall picture quality and viewing experience.
Geaux Saints!
