Actually I thought that Bob Lutz's comments were the first ones that seemed honest and forthright from the perspective of really expressing what GM was thinking. We may disagree with GM's conclusions but at least Lutz had the guts to put the thoughts out their.
I was rather disappointed with all these late bids for Saab. Where were all these great bids 9 months ago when GM was actually acting like they really wanted to sell Saab? These bids were too little too late.
I think GM has a point about responsibility. They probably really are responsible for warranty coverage if they'd sold Saab, then the new owner goes bankrupt.
In essence, I think GM decided that they didn't really believe Saab was a viable going concern by itself, so instead of peeling off the bandaid slowly with years of agony they decided to just rip it off right now and be done with it. This is a part of what Lutz is saying and I hate to say it but he probably has a valid point.
One last thought, GM couldn't have chosen a worse economic time to sell Saab in the past 10 years. Over the long run they probably would have been better off holding it for a couple more years, get the great new vehicles out, then sell when production was > 120K units/year. Do that and maybe a real car company might have bought it. However the US gov't did tie their hands.
