Ls series engine was new to the trucks in 1999 or 2000. It is a super reliable iron block alloy head engine. It was a clean sheet design and shares no parts with previous small block. The 4L60E trans has been around since the late 90's, but it is a very reliable automatic. Either way, SAAB built the same design cars for many years too. Hell, the 1993 900 shares body panels with mid 70's 99.
