As much as everyone would like to blame GM & Ford & Chrysler for building trucks & not econoboxes, remember people were buying trucks big time... Toyota is building a big truck, as is Nissan, heck even Honda got into the game with the Ridgeline. AND trucks are still selling and will sell, maybe not as in as big numbers, but they will.
Plus, these days $1B is not that much to invest into a product line. Think of it this way, in 2009 GM sold about 430K units of the Silverado/Sierra truck line in the US alone, (and in 2008 it was 630K units with a high of about 930K units in 2005), so lets say the $1B investment will be for 6 model years with an average annual sales of 600K units (again US alone) for 3,600K units total... or about $280 per truck, with the trucks sold else where getting a "free ride". While I don't know the average selling price of one of these things you are easily taking about a 1%-1.5% investment on a per unit basis. That seems like a pretty reasonable investment for a product line that in the US alone accounts for about 4%+ of total vehicle sales.
