HP printers have been pretty sucky lately, but I think they're improving. I got a beast Officejet a few years ago for cheap on clearance at Staples. It was way more than what I needed for my college dorm room (it also looked ridiculous in there) but it has been really great actually. I've had a Deskjet 722c, Deskjet 842c, Photosmart 7600, Deskjet 5550, and now the Officejet 7310 (why do I remember this stuff!?) and they've all worked great and for the most part still do. I think the 722c went to a recycling program because it didn't have USB though. I was in Staples the other day and happened to stroll down the printer aisle and I think HP has come up quite a bit lately as far as product quality. I didn't hit any test buttons but the printers I touched didn't feel like they were going to break into a pile of plastic. Just avoid the <$99 ones. You get what you pay for. At work we had a couple newer Brother B&W lasers and I wanted run them over with my car. I just set up my grandmother with a Canon all-in-one and I do not care for it. I didn't like the software package one bit. HP and Windows 7 work perfectly together.
And Dell... yeah there might be better stuff out there. But I've had three and loved them all. You're right, if I were looking for a desktop I'd probably get fancy and build my own. But I am hooked on laptops. I got an XPS m1330 a year and half ago. I pretty much maxed it out, with the exception of Bluray... didn't need that, and with my school discount it was pretty affordable. Dell is one of those brands that I've been around for long enough and had such good results with their products that I can't even imagine being happy with another brand... like my car. The only thing I can see beating Dell in quality is Apple, and I HATE Mac OS. It sucks beyond belief. Don't get me started... haha.
