I had occasion to spend 3 hours behind the wheel of a rental Malibu. It wasn't horible per se, seats were actually pretty confortable, it was quiet, and handled reasonbly well as long as I didn't push. The 2.2 liter 4 was totally gutless though. But what an utterly sole-less appliance. I mean it's obviously not a European sport sedan, but I've driven a number of much cheaper cars that did engage me. I rented a Toyota Yaris at Christmas time and drove it for a week and a half. The more I drove it the more I liked it, it kept pleaantly surprising me. It was much better in snow than I would have suspected and the engine was surprisingly gutsy. I kept finding myself thinking that if I were in a different place in my life (a student say) I really wouldn't mind owning one. The same was true of a rental Nissan Versa we took on a 1500 mile trip. We got 34 MPG and it was a pretty pleasant little highway cruiser. If gas cost $6 a gallon I'd look at one. But the Malibu....if it had a velor interior and fake wire hubcaps I wouldn't have been surprised. I can see why these guys can't sell cars.
