we did the same thing. 8 years now on a Bosch Axiis pair with zero problems. And they use a tiny fraction of the energy of other washer/dryers, so they paid for themselves ages ago.
wrt the GE recommendation, hopefully this newer GE lasts well for him. I won't buy any GE product because I've run into so many horror stories. Most recent was friends who bought a house full of 6 month old top of the line GE appliances, and literally every one of them broke in seriously costly ways over the course of about half a year. Imho, most GE appliances, even the most expensive ones, are complete junk.
