I don't believe that it is necessarily "hard-wired". There are plenty of "average Janes and Joes" out there doing the same things that the "celebs" are doing. They just don't get the ink as they are not public figures. Unfortunately, we have developed a celebrity worship culture where people who have done nothing of any importance are revered and idolized. Paris Hilton, anyone? Although I am a follower of sports, pro, college high school, etc. as well as one who enjoys "good" movies (a matter of personal taste), I do not place any athlete, actor or actress on any sort of pedestal merely because of their ability. I can enjoy their talents, but their personal life is no concern of mine. OTOH, if a particular sports figure or "star" should show that they are worthy of admiration as a human being in some aspect of their lives, then that does effect my opinion of them and occasionally make them heroes. However, I don't expect my heroes to be without fault as I am not without fault. For example, one of my heroes is Hank Aaron, for the class that he displayed as a player and a man. Is there a skeleton in his closet (or two)? Maybe, but I accept that and respect him for what he has shown to this point.
