I am on a well here in Charlotte, NC. The water didn't taste or smell "bad" but the streaks of minerals in the showers and toilets was difficult to remove and made car washing a chore leaving "spots" afterward. Same thing with the dishwasher.
I went with RainSoft for my house, 3 bed 2 bath. There is a whole house system in the crawlspace which uses approx 3 salt blocks per year (I use the big cow/deer licks from feed stores) and a reverse osmosis system under the sink for drinking water. Filters only need changing once per year. In addtion, my package came with 2 air ionizers (because I have 2 HVAC systems).
One of the best investments I made for myself. The water tastes great, and with the softer water less soap is used in the laundry, shower, etc.
