My tires are getting thin. False economy?

Posting on the General BB because this isn't specifically related to my 2006 9-3 Aero, but all cars, really.
I have 40k miles on my Saab. The two rear tires are nearing the end of their life (almost at the wear bars, but not there yet), and the front passenger side tire is fine (it replaced a slashed tire and is therefore relatively new). However, the front driver's side tire is toast. Down to wear bars, clearly finished, and will be straight bald soon.
But... the car handles fine, even in rain. No skids, no funny stuff. It's fine. I want to hold off buying four new tires for another couple months. Can I keep waiting, or am I totally insane?
Thanks,
Sebastian
