however your EF lens should be better quality than the EF-S kit lens that comes with the camera, i.e. if you buy the kit. I would suggest you buy the kit with the kit lens. The kit lens is not great but good enough and the price difference is hardly significant and you get yourself an EF-S IS lens to try out.
Note that you CANNOT use the EF-S lens in your Canon FILM camera. In fact the EF-S lens may damage your film camera mirror, so beware. With this statement, you may weight your options whether to buy new EF-S lenses in the future and whether you want to keep the film camera.
The image stabilization (IS) works well so if you do telephoto work, you may consider an IS lens in the future.
If you can up your price a bit I would suggest the newer Canon T1i or even the T2i.
