There are plenty of cars that are one or two owner cars with 100K or so on them that weren't rentals. I'd walk away from that one and find a better one.
If you like the Taurus --they are actually pretty good cars, IMHO-- there are tons of them out there. At higher mileage you probably won't get much in the way of service records, unless you luck out on a private sale. But if the car looks and runs OK, just do a major service on it. Flush all the fluids, do the serp belt, hoses, change all filters and you'll be good to go. One of the nice things about mainstream domestics like this is that parts are cheap, readily available and most mechanics can work on them.
FWIW, I've spent a lot of time and miles in rented Tauruses and found them to be fairly satisfying to drive, for what they are.
