It's probably better in much the same way that synthetic is "better" than regular dinosaur oil: it lubricates better and lasts longer without breaking down. The Mobil 1 equivalent promises extended drain intervals, not sure what Castrol promises.
That said, some of the newer synthetic oils can cause issues. I had been using Castrol synthetic 10W-40 in my Audi A4 for years with minimal leakage (Mobil 1 does leak, Castrol didn't). Taking advantage of a huge introductory sale on the new Penzoil Platinum 10W-40, I used 6 quarts at the last oil change and the engine started leaking like a sieve, oil spilling over the belly pan leaving puddles on the garage floor! I have been adding Valvoline MaxLife (semi-synthetic with seal conditioner) since and it has stopped the leaks.
