Front main seal and camshaft seals are leaking Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 4 Apr 2010 07:48:03 In Reply to: Re: New Castrol Synthetic oil ??, simul8guy, Sat, 3 Apr 2010 19:41:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Should have been part of a timing belt job, but it wasn't done since the timing belt job was done prematurely due to a defective thermostat. Replacing these seals means another timing belt job; you need to remove the front end of the car, costs ~$1000, so I'm OK with a minor oil leak and more frequent oil changes on my 14 year old car. I'm hoping to avoid a rear main seal leak, which would entail a clutch job - quite expensive on an Audi with Quattro.
On the other hand, the Valvoline Maxlife is also new oil, but it doesn't leak, neither did the Castrol. So something about the Penzoil Platinum helps it seep through the seals.
