I always wanted a cedar house. When we bought one five years ago, I had no concept about how much woodpeckers love cedar houses. I've shot a half dozen, but the others only give us a break in the winter. We normally don't have a problem with the larger re-headed variety, but with the smaller black and white ones. Plastic owls sure don't work. Neither does wind-fluttering foil strips. I haven't found a good solution yet for getting rid of them.
We have several other cedar homes in the neighborhood. Ours is the only one that still has a cedar stain. A couple are even covered with cement siding. If they're attacking painted clapboard, filling the holes and painting is the only solution I can suggest. Once a year I have the person that stained our house to come out and fill the few holes that he can find for $75.
