offering a solution? When one's house is being damaged it's reasonable to take steps to deal with it. Would it be OK with you if a raccoon family took up residence in your basement? Or how about termites and carpenter ants eating some sills, walls or floor joists?
To learn about some other actions, call your state university extension service. Most states have these and they have all kinds of info on this kind of thing, along with a host of other info on lawn & garden, pests, other animals, etc.
A BB may or may not really injure the bird, but if the passive measures aren't working more aggressive steps can be necessary. It may only be a few birds that are the culprits.
There are 3 main species of woodpecker, downy (small), hairy (medium) and pileated (large). There are a couple others, IIRC, depending on where you live. They can definitely be a pest.
