Many go by feel. New plugs feel different as the crush washer collapses. Feels different when re-gaping or reading deposits. Note that the plugs will go in a bit further when the aluminum head is hot. I had cycle guys tell me to not install plugs into hot heads, but the effect is probably minor.
Learning how to tighten bolts by feel is a skill that is needed, as it is often impossible to swing a T wrench in tight places. Plugs are really not tight, but snug.
