Any experts on Handheld GPS units out there?

I'm thinking about getting #1 daughter a handheld GPS to have along on her off-road jaunts this summer and fall in the southwest. She's can read a map, but can be a tad directionally challenged at times, so a GPS may be useful. She'll usually be with several people, but she'll still find it useful. She knows how to use one from courses she's taken in enviro science and on internships.
I don't know much about these devices, so any help/advice is welcome. I know some units have lots of memory for maps, others rely on SD cards. I know some used to only be able to have maps downloaded from a PC, but she runs a Mac (doesn't used Boot Camp or Parallels). What should I be looking for, what are the gotchas?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
