I've been using the Garmin handhelds for a few years now, and Garmin as a brand seems highly regarded, or at least well respected. I'm using an etrex Legend C currently, which is several years old. Before that I had the older version which cost more and did less. Probably something newer out there now. The Legend C picks up satelites quickly, has a decent base memory, ie I know there is a McDonalds, Burger King, and Cracker Barrel at the next exit. It also tracks speed and direction and tells me how far to my destination and when I will arrive at current ave speed, etc. However not really easy to use, but I'm a geezer and my 13yr old would be all over it and find ways to do things I never thought I'd need.
I sail, which is the main reason I got the GPS. I can mark points with an accuracy under 20 ft. That is huge on Lake Erie where being within 100 yds is a big advantage. I race....
There are more accurate units, but if the intent is to provide a GPS for hiking, sailing, driving without direction, etc., then I'd think one of the Garmin basic handhelds would meet her needs. You know her better than I, so bring her along to decide what level of technical ability she feels comfortable. The Auction Site has rebuilt units which are probably OK for less money once you pick your unit. My Legend C uses rechargable NIMH which last 24hrs. That is really good, and I would not expect every unit to do as well, though things may have changed.
My Legend C typically has a stated accuracy of less than 20 ft if the sky visibility is clear. Good enough for me. There is downloadable software that allows plugging in addresses, etc, but not my need or interest. The included maps shows all major roads and where you are in relation to them.
