The Toyota is the gold standard--I had a '91 I bought new and drove 150K, It was great. The Nissan is nearly as good but can be had quite a bit cheaper. I would suggest you get a 4 cylinder/5 speed (which I had). The 6 cylinders and autos (which everyone wants) really don't get much better mileage than a full size truck. You'll get a lot more bang for you buck (since they aren't as popular) with the 4 cylinder/5speed. I used to average 19/20 mpg. And yes, check carefully for rust.
