I think two big things hurt the mid-range brands of Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Mercury, etc:
1. Luxury/near luxury brands went "downmarket" into mid-range territory as far as prices and models making the mid-range brands less relevant.
2. The popularity/availability of leasing and some crazy good lease deals (especially in the last decade) allowed people to much more easily get into luxury/near luxury domestics and imports when they would have otherwise gone with vehicles from Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Mercury, etc.
