"Ineffable specialness" ... a great summation of what it is to drive a Saab. I am an accidental Saab driver, having joined the Order in 1998 with a 1994 900S spruce green hatchback my housemate had (about 98k miles at the time). (We were so thrifty, we were sharing this one car.) I'd grown up with big Chevy Suburbans and Ford trucks, etc. I teased her about not being able to find the ignition switch: she didn't talk to me for a week. And now ... NOW I Understand. While we arrange for some welding in the wheelwells of the 900S, we bought an '03 9-3 2.0t on Tuesday. Dear God. But the sweetest memory I have of our 900S was being approached by someone in the Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum (MI) parking lot who had spotted the 900S and came to share Saab stories. "Oh," she said, "You have the BEST car in the parking lot!" She described her Saab adventures as a rural nurse in Minnesota, how she had the most dependable car in the "Lutefisk" Belt in her '90, I think it was. Everybody else would be stuck in the snow, and she'd make her rounds in this Saab she owned and loved ...
Yesterday we drove to the grocery store with the 9-3, to come out to ANOTHER 9-3 parked next to it, obviously deliberately, in a deserted part of the parking lot.
"Ineffable specialness." Indeed. It's the body style and the reputation. The casual eye follows it, and Saab drivers watch each other pass on the road. A Saab has to LOOK like a Saab. And I think they always will.
