As others have said it doesn't make a diference. The wheel is just made out of two cast pieces bolted together instead of a single cast peice. Older BBS wheels (and I'm sure others) are even three pieces, where the hub, spokes, and rim and separate. People make arguments that mult-piece wheels are lighter, or you can theoretically replace just the damaged piece, but I think it's mostly academic for street use.
What you're thinking of are split rims, which were more common in heavy truck and 4x4 applications but have mostly fallen out of favor due to safety issues. I think they're even illegal in some states. Unless you drive an ancient land rover and like repairing your own tires in the Africa bush, you aren't too likely to run across these anymore.
