Your statement that a 1999 9-3 is "one of the safest cars there is out there" is curious. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) only gives the 1999 9-3 an "Acceptable" rating in their offset frontal collision test. That's basically an average rating. Consider the fact that a similar vintage Toyota Camry (among others) gets the highest rating of "Good" in the same test. Also consider the unprecedented revolution in passenger vehicle safety from the mid 2000s to now from economy cars to luxo-barges, and your statement seems to be misguided at best.
If safety is a concern for you (as it should be, if not for your own but for other's sake), perhaps you could consider curtailing the swiftness and spontaneity on public roads?
