I believe many of the structural changes came into effect in the 1998 NG 900... iirc, 1998 was a "transitional year" + had a bunch of improvements without the new name.
1999 was also transitional in that it still had the red dic (+ associated trionic). 2000 got the black one...
NG900 was probably a bit of a backwards step in safety by Saab standards, but it was still pretty good overall. see the moose test on a NG900 in my post above...
nothing is black + white!
