Laws are different in Canada (for better or for worse). I used to work for a whitewater rafting company, and their clients had to sign waivers all the time. The US folks always said it wasn't worth the paper is was signed on. However, a waiver is a waiver here.
There is a DIY shop here in Calgary. I use if for the lift occasionally (and they have a paint booth for rent for $50/hr). I've painted a couple of my Saabs there. They charge about $20/hr for lifts including all tools (air and manual tools). Doing all the grunt work myself, I end up with a shiny car for $500 (one tenth the cost of taking it to a professional body shop). Bank on spending 40 hours of sanding and prep (in your driveway!) if you want your car to look good after painting.....
And yes, they have waivers to sign. I split the end of my finger open working on my wife's struts. It was my own fault. Never even though of suing the DIY shop for my own stupidity.
