In many circumstances waivers are pretty effective. Two examples are the large marathons and mountain climbing waivers that the guide companies use. Both waivers are pretty explicit that the activity is dangerous and the participant is assuming the risk. I am not aware of a large number of lawsuits arising out of either activities even though there are plenty of significant injuries and fatalities. I think the issue is a little different regarding automobile repair due the possibility of injury to a third party that is not a participant in the waiver.
