I agree with you that it comes down to the engine...all else being equal in features. I bought a 3 year old Honda mower from a friend who was moving and have used it for 5 years on my small lawn with no problems. But, if one with a Honda engine is out of your price range, I would go with a B&S engine. I have used several mowers in the past with B&S engines and they seemed reliable enough.
As for a gas trimmer, I have had a Troy-Bilt 2-stroke gas trimmer for 5 years also with no problems. The same manufacturer makes Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, and several other brands that can all share the different attachments. I have the edger and blower attachments and it is easy to swap them out with the trimmer. I just keep two gas cans in the garage, one for the mower and one for the trimmer. A four-stroke version would have been nice, but for my size lawn and use, I could not justify the price difference.
