You can see my message above... I bought an MDX (certified preowned) and the runner up in this was the Q7.
Reliability ratings were the biggest reason the MDX won out. The second ding on the Q7 was power... It didn't respond well in the V6 in a freeway merge and the v8's mileage is not good. Not a deal breaker on the V6--check it out your self. If emotions ruled the day the Q7 was both of our choices and we don'think alike.
The MDX's clear strength is its handling. Second to none. Everything else is competitive but not class leading. No weakness I can think of.
It's really and experience seeing the cars in person. My first choice before actually seeing the vehicles (but doing a ton of reading on the vehicles) was the Honda Pilot. My wife's first choice was the Volvo XC-90. we both hated the Pilots plasticy interior and it was out--I was shocked how bad the top of the line EX-L interior was...
My wife didn't like the XC-90 as much as me... It stayed in the running but was neither of our top 2 choices in the end.
If Mazda's CX-9 had a higher second row seat cushion it would have been a strong contender--lot's of value--the second row would be great for kids and fine for adults who are a good deal shorter than me (6'). We have friends who own a CX-9 and love it.
The OP mention the Ford Flex... I wish I could get my wife to look at one but she hated the styling. She also refused ANY minivan and this is the clear winner in the the people+ cargo question. I would have started w/ the Odyssey and Sienna if she was a mom who didn't want to drive a Mom's car. Crazy. The again I drive a Saab convertible so I don't have a leg to stand on in the logical choice equation.
