JP498 you said "You don't want more digital-analog-digital conversion than necessary'
However VOIP is Digital to begin with. So having a digital phone that talks to digital call manager that then sends a digital signal to a telco that then converts that to Analog for the receiver sound like the least # of conversions to me.
If you use an Analog phone then that signal will be converted to digital (usually by the call manager or whatever medium you are plugging said phone into). It will then travel digitally to the Telco for the receiving party. Unless said receiving party was also all digital and then there would be no need for conversion of the signal except to the Analog speaker on said phone.
I do not use Vonage - nor do I support it or sell it. I do however work with a full VOIP implementation that I do support (Cisco) and it is 100 % digital to digital (except the mike and speaker at each end).
