the dect6 digital works good.
As does something like a big cisco implementation where it's the same digital all through.
Ideal phone call goes like this, but is not practical for anything other than local calls. Such a system is archaic:
analog speaker or microphone
analog phone
analog switch
analog phone
analog speaker or microphone
Most systems like vonage go like this: Every digital conversion adds delay and alters the quality. Sort of like burning a CD from a record, putting into an MP3, converting back to a tape and wondering why it doesn't sound perfect.
analog speaker or microphone
Cheesy digital cordless phone
analog hookup to VOIP ATA
slightly compressed digital to VOIP provider such as G729
different digital through the PSTN system (digital switched circuit)
compressed digital to cellular phone
analog speaker or microphone
The lack of perfect sound quality is something people will put up with for the other benefits of technology; look at how cellular has taken off!
