Grtifying news, I think, if it's accurate. There was more news last night on the proposed Fiat deal, and as a corporate veteran, it made my head spin.
Would be great if Saab were to receive sufficient financing to reorganize as a small manufacturer -- but would still need to increase unit volume. Some form of government funding would be attractive, perhaps on the French model, but I think there are EU and other obstacles that make this less likely. I've not seen numbers, but I think that few of these state investments have been profitable for taxpayers.
The Moxy construction truck operation in Norway was saved by government investment, but that company lumbers along with a small cadre of customers, and is hardly competitive with the major manufacturers. Basically, the government has "bought" jobs, but hard to see that it has created growth or substantial returns.
Private money is a possibility, but hedge fund and similar ownership hasn't offered long-term benefits either. Best example is the ambitious but ill-starred investment by Cerberus in Chrysler.
Like I said, looks like we get to wait. At least the corporate machinations are entertaining -- if not encouraging.
