Howdy folks,
Just wanted to pass along the update. I went ahead and both replaced the existing GFCI outlet and installed a new, non-GFCI single outlet for the freezer. Installed a new box to split the main cable coming in, ran a new short cable to the GFCI outlet, then ran a new cable a few feet to a new box & single outlet for the freezer.
Turns out the NEC specifically permits non-GFCI oulets if they're dedicated for things like appliances and installed such that they won't be used for power tools and the like. So I think I'm covered.
