Thank you both, Noel and Gene, for your help. I added Techron to the new tank of gas. The pulling started to get lighter and just about to catch . . . then the pull cord broke! Probably due to too many attempts in the last few days trying to start the engine. I had to take the starter off, compress the spring and re-attach the rope. Then the spring jumped out. hmm, this is turning into a cascading failure. Will have to take on the problem tomorrow.

This EPA mandate Ethanol nonsense is causing my stuck lawnmower to produce more air pollution (from the repeated smoke balls) in a week than my car does in a month's driving; if I end up having to replace the mower, that's more pollution going into the manufacturing than a few year's driving would produce. Government arm-twisting/gun-toting coercive powers like this should not exist at all, lest third party like the farm lobby get hold of the power. Power corrupts.
