Self-clear UPS to Canada?

Has anyone here actually done this? I've seen some past posts suggesting that some have. What I'm wondering, is if I ask UPS to self-clear, does the shipment get held up at the border, or does it get held up at my local UPS depot (even though I am not at a point of entry for UPS ground)?
I'm happy to run the paperwork from the local UPS office to our local CBSA office + back to save the brokerage fee, but don't want to have to deal with offices hundreds of miles away from me... anyone with experience doing this?
thanks!
James...
