Best thing to do is make sure you have an extension cord that is rated for the lawn mower you have. If the lawn mower is less than 12 amps, a 14 gauge cord will be fine. If the lawn mower is 12 amps to 16 amps, a 12 gauge cord will be fine. Stay away from the cheep 12 amp, 16 gauge cords, these are usually your inexpensive Home Depot specials and may overheat on something pulling a lot of amps over an extended period of time.
You can have issues with voltage drop, but on this short of a run as long as you use the proper rated cord you will be fine. Any manufacturer can put the words "heave-duty exterior grade" on their product, so check the gauge numbers on the cord. It should be stamped or embossed on the jacket of the cord (would say something like 14/2, 14/3 for 14 gauge, 12/2, 12/3 for 12 gauge).
Check both ends of the extension cord, make sure the terminals are clean, not corroded, and intact. Missing ground prongs are not uncommon and the cord will still work, but you can also drive around without your seatbelt off and the car will still run! Also make sure you are plugging into a GFCI protected receptacle and test it!

- Sure, but as others note that you use 12 gauge cords, Noel, Sat, 25 Sep 2010 14:36:21
